The construction of our new San Jorge de Milpe Orchid and Bird Eco-Lodge has recently been completed in December, 2006. This brand new lodge is located in the Subtropical Rainforest just outside of Mindo. Our new lodge contains beautiful, well kept birding trails, natural running rivers, 11 cascading waterfalls, observatory decks with spectacular views of the upper tropical rainforest valley, 300 varieties of orchids species, enormous amount of moths , butterflies, reptiles, mammals and insects and over 450 species of birds. Hammocks are strung for relaxing in comfort and watching the birds at their feeders. You can even spot birds through the windows of your room! Accommodations at our two-story cedar Milpe lodge have implemented the use of orthopedic mattresses, with hot showers and wonderful views from every room. San Jorge de Milpe Orchid and Bird Eco-Lodge has the comfort and rustic elegance of a Subtropical Rainforest lodge, making it suitable for all interests including birding, nature research, adventures , photography, a romantic getaway, or an educational retreat. San Jorge also has a fully developed tropical organic garden, making your meals fresh and delicious. Unique to San Jorge de Milpe is our one of a kind Bird observatory hilltop. Only a 10 minute hike from your sleeping quarters, walking through a pristine tropical forest conserved by San Jorge , on a clear day, one has the chance to spot an average of 50 bird species between 6 am and 9 am without even taking a step! The record number for our Milpe hilltop was 68 species in these three hours. The hilltop lies above the canopy of the Milpe rainforest, offering a magnificent 360º view of the surrounding area. In December of 2007, Milpe set the world record for number of bird species in one area, making our reserve in Milpe an excellent location for world-class birding.

Our guests says
The San Jorge lodges were, as Jorge Cruz himself proclaims, "magic". The Quito lodge was steeped in history, and the birding there might have been great but our time was too short. Food there excellent. The Milpe lodge was astonishing in its opulence in the middle of a jungle, like Shangri-La. The host Jorge was the most interesting person I have ever met, with encyclopedic knowledge about everything. He entertained us with knowledge of flora and fauna of both ecosystems. Room were clean and spacious, food creative and delicious.
